Time under tension is the total time a muscle is working under load during a set — a function of how many reps you do and how fast you do them. It’s the quality-side companion to training volume: not just how many reps, but how much real work each one demands.

Two people can do the same number of reps with the same weight and get very different results, because one controls each rep and the other bounces through them.
